About Motocross Motorcycles

Motocross is one of the most adventurous forms of motorcycle sports. These days, ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) are also sued for motocross racing all over the world. It is said that the original races that inspired motocross racing are scrambling competitions held in the Great Britain.
The original British version of the sport is considered as a revolutionary factor in motocross racing. The history of scrambling can be traced back to 1924 and the first scrambling was held in Camberley, Surrey, Great Britain.

This was the time when sports become one of the most popular activities in Britain and Birmingham Arms Company (BSA) along with other motorcycle makers such as Norton and AJS competed in the event.
Off road racing motorcycles used in the initial races were not very different from the regular street bikes. The swinging fork suspension made its ways to motorcycles nearly after 20 years of the motocross racing and this was in the 1950s.

Throughout the 1940s, BSA motorcycles dominated the mot cross racing and the company was the biggest motorcycle maker in the world. The first motocross race outside United Kingdom was held in 1952 and the championship was named as European Championship. FIM, the governing body of motorcycling organized this championship and the engine capacity was supposed to be 500 cc.
The competition reached to the world championship status by 1957. During this period, motorcycle icon Yamaha came up with their own motocross bike and this bike is considered as the first motocross bike exclusively meant for this purpose.

It was in 1962 that other motorcycle races with different cubic capacity were organized. There was a 250 cc world championship and for the first time, two stroke motorcycles started to compete in the races. Husqvarna and Greeves were two popular brands during those days because they were producing motorcycles that are extremely lightweight and rub built.
For the first time, the four stroke motorcycle racings started to fade away. The sport was no longer interesting on heavier four stroke motorcycle and the minor technical issues that two stroke motorcycles had was resolved by the makers.
Within a very short span of time, the game was dominated by two stroke motorcycles and the British domination in the sports started to fade.

The sport was introduced to United Sates in 1966 by Swedish Motocross Champion Torsten Hallman, who had organized a motorcycle exhibition against the well known American Motorcycle Riders of that time.
Hallman's path was followed by many other motocross champions and their lightweight motorcycles dominated the race. However, the European domination in the sport was getting a blow from determined Japanese motorcycle makers like Yamaha and Suzuki.
Suzuki has won the first motocross title in 1970 in the 250 cc class. By this time, the manufacturer's class started mixed wins from Japanese motorcycle makers and European makers. However, the rider's class was constantly dominated by the European riders.

By 1975, a 125 cc class was introduced to motocross racing. The domination of European riders continued till the end of 1970s but by that time, American riders started getting their titles. Interestingly, the motocross industry had a boom in United States and sport became quite popular.
Japanese contributed mostly to the motocross races. They were not ready to satisfy with the air cooled engines and by 1980s, the water cooled engines replaced the traditional air cooled engines in motorcycles. Invention of rear suspension is another great thing happened in the motocross racing world because with mono cock suspension system, riders were able to enjoy utmost control over their bikes.
The two stroke based motorcycles were undoubtedly the most ideal choice for motorcycle riders all over the world. However, the strict emission norms implemented by many countries forced the manufacturers to come up with engines that do not emit much carbon monoxide and this made a chance for four stroke engines to revisit the sports.

Today, there are many motorcycle brands that compete in motocross. KTM, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, Aprilia and Husqvarna are the major brands that compete in the race. All these motorcycle makers have their own distinct technology and the outcome is totally different.
With the invention of new technologies, the domination over the sport changes for different motorcycle makers and this also has a role to play in determining the winning factor. The tires as well as the suspension system on today's motorcycles are far advanced compared to the earlier versions of motocross motorcycles and this also made the sport even more enjoyable.
